Especially when I have the solution to their problem. Is there a benefit to my child discovering their own life direction independent of me? Am I taking something away from them if I provide a few shortcuts? Is there anything wrong with being best friends with my kids? If you have ever asked yourself these questions, read on. You may be surprised by the answersRaising children is often counterintuitive. Your natural response on how to engage your childs problem may notlage be the best solution. Sure, you can fix the immediate concern, but it will always be your solution, not theirs. Ask yourself if you are solving or supporting your children? Solving is providing answers, shortcuts, and helping them minimize and avoid struggle. Let them walk head first into a mistake. And when they have struggled long enough with the confusion, and you know it is time to give them the answer DONT. Wait until they have found their own solution and praise them for their discovery.An eagle pushes its newly born young from a cliff-side nest. The baby eaglet plummets toward the ground. If the eaglet wants to fly, it does. If it doesnt, just before the baby hits the rocks below, the mother eagle swoops underneath, catches the bird in her mouth, and saves it from certain death. She flies upward toward the nest, and just as she reaches the sa fe proximity of the nest, the mother eagle drops the eaglet again in a free fall toward the rocks below. How close do you let your kids come to the rocks? How often do you save them, convincing yourself it was for their benefit? Do you drop them again, or do you return them to the safety of the nest? Having them securely in the nest is easier, isnt it? At least for you, it is. You need to put on your adult-parent hat and begin training your kids for the day they leave the house by helping them learn how to survive on their own. Children are guests in your home. If you dont allow them to experience setbacks on their own, the discovery process as adults will be much harder, and the scars, often deeper.Suffering, struggling, and failure helps children build an arsenal of experience to help achieve success as an adult. Rebounding from adversity is a process that must be learned, not taught. ur setbacks in life typically create inner strengths that lace together in adulthood. Our subcons cious calls on these memories of strife and struggle to help us persevere and assure ourselves that we will succeed again. The result of these tribulations in our childrens lives is the formation of their own personal pride which awards them the ultimate participation trophy, a badge of adolescent victory. It might sound extreme to say, but stop parenting so much. No more drone parents Our actions of hovering and dominating our children may be intended with love, but they cause harm to your childs future life.You dont want to take away their own growth, creativity, or resourcefulness. Dont dull the edges of a knife that will one day be needed to cut its way through the gristle of life. It shouldnt matter what mountain your child is on, only that he or she learns how to climb falls recovers and climbs again. Be patient with your childs life course. Let them stumble and pick themselves back up. Be sure to praise and affirm them when they do And when they are in a pit, assure them y ou have faith they will discover the solution to the setback.Also, if you have ever called your son or daughter your best friend, you need to look in the mirror and say to yourself, Quit trying to give your kid everything you didnt have And stop using them as a reset to relive your own childhood. Try saying to your son or daughter, I dont want to be your friend. I am one of two people who has been assigned the responsibility of being your parent. You will not always agree with me. But I will always listen to you, even when I think you are wrong. At times, you will be angry with me. I will let you make mistakes. I will encourage you when you pick yourself up. I will smile when you try again. And I might tear when I see your strength in the face of adversity.Families have always been stronger when parents exercise wisdom and maturity in teaching their kids difficult life lessons, even though it risks relational adversity between parent and child. We need to stop sacrificing our kids p ersonal pride to stimulate our own. Effective parenting is about children discovering their own future, not children adapting to the future we parents think best for them. The Iron Mike rule The one thing successful people do differentlyThe Iron Mike rule The one thing successful people do differentlyBy the time he was 13 years old, Michael Gerard Tyson had been arrested 38 times and was sentenced to a Juvenile center in upstate New York.Tyson was a far cry from the typical profile of a juvenile delinquent he was pudgy, extremely shy, spoke with a lisp, and was afraid of getting into fights.In fact, he was regularly beaten up by neighborhood bullies who dubbed him the Little Fairy Boy.Like fruchtwein street kids at the time, Tyson was raised by an alcoholic mother and grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, a rough neighborhood that resembled the wild west- imagine movie scenes of people shooting one aleidher, police cars and ambulances ringing deafening sirens whilst speeding down streets, robbers breaking windows, and young kids selling drugs to hookers.Given that Tyson was a product of his environment, the odds of him escaping a destined life of crime, dr ug dealing and early death, were slim to none.But as luck would have it, Tysons fate would change when he was brought to the attention of the legendary boxing coach, Cus Damato.The Iron Mike RuleCus Damato was a short, bald-headed, stern faced, Italian boxing trainer, who like Tyson, also grew up in a rough neighborhood in the Bronx, New York.Tyson would later describe Damato as a complex and dark figure who didnt have a happy muscle in his face. 1Damatos astounding resume spoke for itself he had successfully managed, trained and bred two heavyweight champions, Floyd Patterson and Jose Torres.On March 1980, Tyson met face to face with Damato in an old musky boxing gym, filled with weather-beaten newspapers plastered across the walls of a converted meeting hall, located above a police station in Catskill, New York.After a sparring session in a small ring- during which Tyson was punched in the nose and bled profusely- Damato invited Tyson to lunch at his white Victorian house.During t he meal, Damato turned his head towards Tyson and said, If you listen to me, I can make you the youngest heavyweight champion of all time.Tyson flinched at the baffling words of the 70-year-old man he had just met, but committed himself to be under the tutelage and rigorous training regime of Damato.Day in and day out, Tyson would wake up at 4 a.m, run for 3 to 5 miles, and train tirelessly in the gym for up to 55 hours, and 200 rounds of sparring each week.As he later noted in an interview, no one wants to get up and run at 4 in the morning when its pitch dark, but it has to be done, and the only reason I do it so early is because I believe the other guy isnt doing it. And that gives me a little edge. 2In the evenings, Tyson would spend hours watching and studying the fight videos of the best fighters at the time.And by 9.30 p.m. on most days, he went to bed and fell asleep.For the next several years, Tyson would repeat this tiresome and boring daily routine every single day.And ev entually, his efforts paid off.By 1982, Tyson had beaten every amateur boxing opponent he faced. It welches a bit serendipitous. To be honest with you, I started my career coding on the tech side. That was enjoyable but I found myself mora interested in the business aspects of entrepreneurship, so that led me to business school. I was really excited about the revenue side of the business and during business school, I had a hard time figuring out whether marketing or sales was a better fit for me. I liked marketing because it seemed the world was moving in a direction in which marketing was becoming more important and more data-driven. It seemed my abilities as an analytical person and the MBA degree was more tailored to a marketing career. But I like sales because I enjoyed the face-to-face aspects of that job, especially in B2B where it tended to be a more powerful role. They made more money, so those were the factors. I actually started a company after business school and was a consultant to HubSpot when they were a one-person company and they just happened to put me in a sales role. So thats basically how I got started and then as that evolved, it became my full-time job and then I scaled the team. It actually ended up being the best of both worlds in the sense that I got to do the practice of selling in a company that was revolutionizing marketing. I got to do both in a way. The big aha moment I had there, in the first year I hired 12 people in sales and the eighth one I hired was the number one salesperson at a very large public companylike they were number 1 out of 500 reps. What amazed me is when they joined our firm, even though we were small, they werent our best rep. They werent terrible, but they werent Number one. I realized that the criteria you should be looking for in your sales hires needs to be customized to your business context. In sales, that usually means What are you selling?, How complicated is it?, How long does it take? and Who are you selling to? Some people naturally do better with CIOs versus CMOs versus consumers. People sell jets, they sell pencils and they sell software. The best salesperson for each one of those is different. Its really important that people, first off, appreciate that and second off, work to engineer their own formula of what criteria is best for them. What happened with Hubspot through that iterative process of me studying and measuring it, the top 5 criteria were Coachability, Curiosity was number two, Work Ethic was 3, Intelligence was 4, and 5 was Prior Success. What technology/innovation/platform has had the most profound effect on sales in the past few years? Gone.io out in San Francisco. Its an artificial intelligence software that listens to calls and translates them into whos talking and what they are talking about. If you read their blog, theyve been able to statistically prove or disprove anecdotes in selling, like how often does the seller talk versus the buyer in the opening call and does that yield success. Their software has enabled correlating sales behaviors to sales success. Speaking of AI, how has it directly affected the sales world? AI is one of the innovations affecting sales. There are a lot of machine learning opportunities. As an example, AI has opportunities in, say, digital marketing. If you think about pay-per-click ads, all youre doing is rapidly moving through matching different messages and a dvertising to different audiences to maximize click-through rates and lead generation. Machines can do that faster and thats an easy application. Once you do that, its not hard to take that same principle and attach it to sales emails and sales voicemails in terms of what the optimal message has been and the frequency. People like Outreach.io and Sales Loft have helped to make that rapid experimentation possible. It will take a while for machines to drive the more complicated part of the sales process like the discovery and demonstration. Are the worlds of sales and marketing converging? Do you think they should remain in their own distinct fields?I dont know if theyre converging, but the need for alignment is critical. Traditionally, those two functions have not necessarily gotten along. In most organizations, they tend to blame each other for missed numbers. And as such, they tend to do their own thing, whether its trade show booths and branding on the marketing side or cold calli ng on the sales side. But now, with so many buying journeys starting in a domain owned by marketing, like the website and email, and then moving to a domain thats owned by sales, like Web X or whatever, aligning the two groups is critical. Organizations that figured that out have a competitive advantage and those that dont are not really well-aligned with where modern buying is going. In regards to cold calling and cold emailing, what are your key steps that salespeople should take?First off, people dont invest in other channels like content marketing to attract people enough. Thats just natural bias, but when you do cold call, there just needs to be a much higher value-add, much more customization, much more personalization. Ive seen people get really creative with personalized gifting, doing a lot more research on the buyer before they reach out. What should salespeople avoid? Anything non-personalized, like the 10 attempts of a very generic email time and time again. What spurred your career move from heading sales at HubSpot to entrepreneurship and lecturing at Harvard? One of the attractions of being an entrepreneur is that if you are successful, you can really customize the blueprint of your life - in terms of how much time you spend as a dad, as a husband, working out, hobbies, and other stuff. Fortunately, I came out the other side of HubSpot with that autonomy. But at the same time, Ive been given the great gift of an experience around revenue generation, which is a great passion of mine, especially in helping entrepreneurs. I have a vision of how much time I want to spend on my profession, and I want to maximize the impact I can have on entrepreneurs from a revenue perspective. Harvard Business School actually approached me, based on my work on the book, to build a sales studienplan for the school. It was hard to think of a better opportunity or platform to help influence entrepreneurs in terms of a best-in-class revenue strategy.

Edison Patent Award, the prestigious Society award that recognizes the work of a distinguished inventor. Established in 1997, the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award honors eminent creative achievement in the form of a kapitnspatented invention, which is broadly recognized as significantly enhancing some aspect of the practice of mechanical engineering or having a significant impact on at least one industrial or commercial sector. These impacts may include creating a new business or industry substantially improving the efficiency or productivity of an existing machine or process dramatically reducing the size, weight or resource (e.g., energy or water) requirements in an existing machine or device improving the quality of life or financially impac ting an existing business or industry. When was the last time one of your ideas got the green light?Its clear that people like a certain amount of autonomy at work- without it, we lose our motivation, our ability to succeed, and our health.Now theres mora proof that the majority of workers are stumbling by without that autonomy, just taking orders. Robert Half and Happiness Works released a studyon workplace happiness showing that a staggering 55% of people surveyed said they have little or no control over their work, and that 58% said they have few opportunities for creativity, among many other findings.Plus, getting older doesnt necessarily mean youll like your job more- the report found that as you get older, happiness and interest at work go down, and your stress level goes up. That pro cess starts at age 35, the report found.From the ages of 35-54, people arent as happy or into their work as when they hit about 55, when some of this loss is reversed. Employees older than 55 feel better about their jobs in those younger than them. The study didnt explain why, although its more likely that after 55, people face reduced financial and family pressures from raising kids, or enjoy greater seniority and thus autonomy.No wonder Americans dont fear robots taking their jobs, since everything feels cold and depersonalized to the majority of workers during a long workday. Thats a lot of people in America who are working on auto-pilot.The role of empowerment at workOverall, the researchers gauged the happiness levels of more than 24,000 professional employees in 8 countries- that 2,000 of those people were from the UK and provided information about how they feel at work, which was displayed in various charts. More than half of those surveyedlive and work in North America.The researchers explored six elements that have an impact on workers happiness. Empowerment was one of them, which featured the findings about control and chances to be creative. Not surprisingly, certain positions offered the least ability for people to spread their wings- the survey found that only 35% of those in administrative roles and 34% in accounting said they could often be creative at work.The researchers suggested boosting empowermentby favoring manager assistance over micromanagement.Phil Sheridan, senior managing director at Robert Half, commented on empowerment in a statement.Create a culture where team members are encouraged to stretch their problem-solving skills by taking smart, strategic risks and provide them with the opportunity to contribute new creative ideasBut also make it known that you are available to offer support and guidance so that they dont find themselves floundering alone, he said.What the happiest workers shareTheres a roadmap for creating happy teams and workers, but few companies follow it. For instance, control over ones work also ties into the hallmarks of happiness, or the things that the happiest employees all possess,which author Daniel Pink explained later in the report.Although he prefaced his descriptions by saying everyone is different, two hallmarks of happiness that Pink mentioned were having some control over the work you do, when you do it, how you do it and who you do it with and having great colleagues who you both like and trust.One of Pinks suggestions on how managers can boost their reports happiness is to meet with each person separately once a week for quick discussions (maybe five-minute ones) about whether they are getting ahead in what theyre working on, and offering assistance if theyre not. Youll have to spend a lot of time with them, after all, so its worth the investment.Why who you work with mattersAnother finding that stood out is that our happiness at work depends heavily on whether we like who we work with.The research found that, compared to people that didnt work well with their coworkers, those whoreported having good relationships with others on their team were 2.7 times more likely to experience happiness at work.Eighty-one percent said they get along with members of the direct team theyre part of, while 62% reported having good friends in the office and 68% saying they think groups at their employer generally work well together.It not all fun and games for top leadersIn another portion of the report, it became clear that the leaders at the top of the corporate ladder, senior executives, were the winning the most when it came to happiness.Based on responses from 2,000 part- and full-time adult workers in the UK, this group was the happiest when compared to staff-level professionals, managers, sales and customer service workers and administrative and secretarial clerks.But its not all rosy at the top.
